Showing the light required redesigning the lamp.
ICOS began with a simple architectural question: how can a structure hold light without enclosing it?
The icosahedron offers one answer. Its twenty triangular faces are reduced to their edges, creating a precise wooden framework around an exposed light source.
A structure that makes light visible.
The warm glow recalls the intimacy of candlelight, contrasting with the precision of the geometry. Light passes freely through the structure while touching the wood, bringing its natural color and grain to life and revealing the character of the light itself.
At first glance, the object appears as a minimal wooden frame. Yet its triangular geometry creates a layered spatial reading, with multiple pyramidal volumes overlapping and shifting depending on the viewpoint.
Solid wood, shaped by hand.
ICOS requires solid wood to address both structural and aesthetic questions. The direction of the grain follows the edges, solving both at once. Wood is cut with precision and assembled by hand to maintain the exact angles required by the geometry. Each piece is finished with natural oil.
Each collection explores a different wood species.
From architectural study to finished object.
Designed and handcrafted by Nico Freitas in Barcelona, each ICOS is individually numbered, engraved with my signature, and digitally authenticated.
